RANGE information
Will you make a 36" range, cooktop, range top, or other sizes?
We are focusing on the 30" range as our first product. We plan to expand our offerings in the future to include additional sizes and form factors. We are actively exploring solutions to accommodate other sizes, including one for 36” and 24" products, and we plan to share more soon. The best way to stay informed on product updates and announcements is to subscribe to our emails via the form fill below.
Do you offer a 240 V version of Charlie?
We don’t offer a 240 V version of Charlie, but look forward to adding that option to our product lineup in the future.
What sizes and outputs are the induction cooking zones?
From a shape and size perspective, as long as your pans have a flat bottom and are greater than 3 ⅛” in diameter, they will work. To test for compatibility, place a magnet on the bottom of your pan. The stronger the magnet sticks, the better the cookware will work with induction.
Cast iron, enameled cast iron, and many types of stainless-steel cookware are all induction-compatible.
Aluminum, copper, and glass cookware will not heat up or turn on unless it has a magnetic metal layer at the bottom.
How durable is the cooktop's surface?
The cooktop is made of durable glass-ceramic composite and is very robust. We suggest avoiding sliding heavy pots or pans full of food across the surface, as this action might cause small scratches. Instead, pick up the cookware and move it.
Scratching can be caused by burrs on the bottom of pans that are dragged across the cooktop or if salt or any hard, granular ingredient has been spilled on the cooktop and a pan is dragged over it.
Treat your cooktop and pans well, and they’ll treat you to many delicious meals and a gleaming surface for years to come.
BATTERY INFORMATION
How long does the battery last?
We’re guessing you’re asking a few different questions here, so we’ll break it down:
How long will my stove have power if there’s a power outage?
- During a power outage, a fully charged 5 kWh battery can power the range for 3-5 meals.
Can I cook a big meal, like dinner for 50, without running out of power?
- We have also tested the range's battery capacity by cooking a Thanksgiving-sized meal for 50 people. We were able to accomplish this easily on a fully charged battery.
Is it dangerous to have a battery so close to something so hot? How do I know it’s safe?
Charlie has a 5kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) rechargeable battery. Its battery chemistry is similar to what you may already be using in your home — LFP batteries have been validated and widely tested in electric vehicles and home battery storage systems.
In terms of battery and safety certifications, Charlie and its battery comply with relevant UL standards and other applicable compliance requirements: UL 1973, UN38.3, UL9540A test.
The 9540A test is the gold standard test, in which the battery is intentionally destroyed to see if it immolates. Charlie passed with flying colors, and the adjoining cabinetry in the test remained safe to the touch.
Will I ever need to replace the battery?
The battery is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which typically lasts for 10-15 years before you experience significant degradation. The battery is modular so we can send you a new one if needed. If your battery has many years of life left when you need a new range, you can go ahead and pop it in your new Copper range for reuse.
Can I buy a new battery in 10-15 years when the battery in my Charlie degrades? How much will it cost?
Yes, you can. By that time, we will likely have a battery exchange program. As for the cost, we can't predict battery prices that far in advance. Battery prices have fallen 10x in 10 years because it is a rapidly advancing field. In 2035 and beyond, prices for a Charlie replacement battery are likely to be reasonable.
Can I set the battery to stay fully charged in anticipation of a blackout, from an incoming storm, or a planned public safety power shutdown?
Currently, Charlie charges intelligently based on when power is clean and cheap. We plan to allow you to set your own custom charging hours in the future. Until then, if you want to change the hours your Charlie charges at, email support@copperhome.com.
Safety information
Is there a danger of Charlie tipping over on my rambunctious child or pet?
The benefit of having a big, 130 lb battery at the bottom of the range is that Charlie is much less likely to tip over than other ranges on the market. We tested this by hanging a 25 lb weight on the oven handle and placing a 250 lb weight on the open door, simulating someone opening the oven and putting their weight on the door. UL only requires companies to test up to 15 lb. Even with the extra weight, Charlie did not budge.
Does Charlie have any built-in safety features if I accidentally leave the cooktop on?
Yes. The cooktop only heats up if a compatible pot or pan is on top of the corresponding cooking zone. If no pan is present, no power will be sent to the cooking zone until a compatible pan is found.
The best way to ensure that your cooktop is safe after usage is to turn off the cooking zone and remove pots and pans from the range as soon as you’re done. This also expedites the process of the cooktop cooling down. Do not rely on the pan detector to turn off the cooking zone.
The Charlie range will also turn off automatically if it has been left on for an extended period of time with a pan present. If the cooking zone is set between 0-25% power, it will turn off after 24 hours to allow for slow cooking. At higher power settings, cooking zones will turn off sooner. 2024 incentives and rebates
What’s going on with the IRA rebates? Will I still get my tax credit?
The biggest rebate or credit for Charlie is the Residential Clean Energy Credit, also known as the 25D tax credit. This is the 30% tax credit you get when installing home solar or energy storage. While this was updated by the IRA, it predated the IRA and has long been popular across the country and political spectrum. It is currently available, though the IRS hasn’t published the forms for 2025 filings yet.
You can access the 2024 form here and view step-by-step instructions here.
We are constantly tracking new incentives and rebates for battery-equipped induction ranges that can help reduce the cost of electrifying your home or multifamily building. Click here to learn more.
How does Charlie qualify for the 25D tax credit?
The minimum battery capacity to apply for the 25D tax credit is 3 kWh. Charlie's battery is a 5 kWh battery, making it eligible for this tax credit as a storage technology.
The total cost of the range qualifies for the tax credit as the range is the equipment required to charge the battery and use the power stored in the battery. This is similar to how inverters, wiring, conduit, and installation labor for a home battery system are covered by the tax credit.
Cooking
How will I know when the cooktop is cool?
The red bar indicator by the cooking zone(s) you used will remain partially lit up if the surface is still hot. As it cools, you will see less of the indicator until it disappears completely. This signals that the cooktop is back to room temperature and safe to clean.
Is there something Charlie isn’t great at making yet?
We’ve received feedback that Charlie’s pizza-making capabilities don’t yet match what a customer was capable of achieving on their previous oven. We’ve found that some adjustment may be needed depending on your old oven. For example, in Charlie, some of the best pizzas we’ve made have been baked in the center or top portion of the oven. We’re excited to test and develop a Charlie-specific pizza recipe and will share the results soon!
